THE STORY BEHIND THE “I LOVE LEARNING” SERIES BOOKS

I developed the “I love learning” Series books for one of my children who has learning difficulties and for whom English is not her first language.

I know both academically and through the observation of my children that every child learns differently. Studies show the more interactive the learning process, the more likely the retention of new information. Seeing my daughter struggle with the basics and having the ethos that every child deserves the opportunity to learn the basics, I aimed to provide for my daughter a format for learning nouns, sentence structure, spelling and other important general knowledge, in a format which was both educational and fun.

In each book of the series, the learner is given twenty of the most common items pertaining to the books’ subject matter. Why twenty? Because ten is too small a number, as children are able to learn new information, particularly vocabulary at an astounding speed. Therefore twenty items of new information per book gives the learner a bit more of challenge without taxing the short attention span of children, neither draining the time of the parent, as each book can be read in its entirety in one reading session.

The “I love learning” Series not only benefits children, but also those with learning difficulties and learners of a new language to learn nouns, sentence structure, spelling and more, in a less formal way.

It is my hope that the “I love learning series” will be translated into many languages as aiding literacy and numeracy, especially that of the basics, is one of my passions and areas of dedication.

BOOK STRUCTURE

Each book in the series follows the same structure with regards to the learner readiness:

The bar – Each sentence on every page of the book is separated by a bar.
Four bars of learning – There are four bars of sentences on each page.
Bar difficulty – Each sentence within a bar provides further learning based on the students’ academic readiness.
Bar reading – Each book can read in its entirety by reading ONLY the sentence bar or bars applicable to the academic readiness of the student. E.g. one might read only bar 1 sentences of the entire book to a toddler, bars 1 – 2 to a four year old, bars 1 – 3 to a six year old and bars 1-4 to an eight year old.

Each book in the series follows the same structure for learning:

Twenty – Twenty new things will be learned per book.
Context – The learner will be first given the full picture, providing context to the subject matter.
Identification – Isolation of the necessary object/subject so it can be readily identified.
Reinforcement – Simple questions and colours are used to aid retention of the newly learned information. Some questions can be ignored or read depending on the age and ability of the child.
Review – The learned information is “tested” in an informal and fun manner through the use of games.
