“Meditation” by Veena Nankani

A poem about taking time out for oneself to rest the soul and preparation for learning.  
 

Some people need meditation, instead they use food
Some people need meditation, instead they use sugar
Some people need meditation, instead they use cigarettes
Some people need meditation, instead they use alcohol
Some people need meditation, instead they use drugs.  
 
Some people need meditation, instead they use shopping
Some people need meditation, instead they cake on makeup
Some people need meditation, instead they use jewellery
Some people need meditation, instead they use shoes and handbags
Some people need meditation, instead they do their nails and hair even when they can’t afford it.
 
Some people need meditation, instead they use procrastination
Some people need meditation, instead they use activities
Some people need meditation, instead they use excuses
Some people need meditation, instead they use company
Some people need meditation, instead they use relationships
Some people need meditation, instead they use sex.  
 
Some people need meditation, instead they use self harm
Some people need meditation, instead they use manipulation
Some people need meditation, instead they use bullying
Some people need meditation, instead they use force
Some people need meditation, instead they use violence.  
 
Some people need meditation, instead they use gambling
Some people need meditation, instead they use television
Some people need meditation, instead they use social media
Some people need meditation, instead they use fame
Some people need meditation, instead they use wealth accumulation.
 
Some people need meditation, instead they use superstition
Some people need meditation, instead they use tradition
Some people need meditation, instead they use rituals
Some people need meditation, instead they use idolatry of celebrities
Some people need meditation, instead they use religion.  
 
Spend time alone regularly
Sit in silence regularly
Do not occupy every moment with sound and activity
Detoxify your mind from over-stimulation
You will find your peace within
Calm yourself within
Do this often enough and calm will be your nature
Then will begin your readiness to learn from the masters of wisdom
Start with silence – That is how you will hear.
