“Join the symphony” by Veena Nankani

A poem about kindness and the equality of our value as human beings.

When I acknowledged your existence
That was me singing.

When I treated the doorman with the same respect as the CEO
That was me singing.

When I smiled at strangers
That was me singing.

When I scheduled time for you
That was me singing.

When I put my phone on silent because I was with you
That was me singing.

When I looked into your eyes to show you I was fully present
That was me singing.

When I stayed longer just to listen, because you needed an ear
That was me singing.

When I celebrated your accomplishments
That was me singing.

When I rejoiced over the progress of your children
That was me singing.

When I was happy just because you were happy
That was me singing.

When I remembered the name of the security guards
That was me singing.

When I offered to help, knowing you were to shy to ask
That was me singing.

When we both knew that you knew better but you still chose to err
And I helped you without judgement
That was me singing.

When you messed up so badly that its impact on others was severe
Yet I treated you with compassion
That was me singing.

When I gave you what you didn’t deserve
That was me singing.

When I awaited until you were ready
That was me singing.

When I forgave you when you hurt me
That was me singing.

When I comforted you only by my presence, knowing it was not a time for words
That was me singing.

When I looked into your eyes and I saw your pain and you knew that I understood
That was me singing.

When you saw in my eyes that I was cheering you on, that I was willing you on
That was me singing.

When you had overcome and I saw your joy return
That was me singing.

Whenever I am kind
That is me singing.

When I live the lessons I profess
That is me singing.

This is me singing.
Will you sing with me?

I bet your voice is beautiful
No? Then you can play an instrument
No? Then you can clap
No? Then you can cheer
No? Then you can smile
No? Then you can blink.

A melody is richer, than a single note.
A harmony is richer, than a single voice.

Do you hear the symphony?
Won’t you join the orchestra?
We can make beautiful music together.
We can sing until our singing turns into dancing
Come and join us sing
Let’s make it us singing.

(I hear that voices of my fellow singers that understand this poem. I see the bright light of those that live out the metaphor of this poem. Many of you are singing louder than me. Be blessed in all your singing, for you are saving lives – One at a time through kindness. The world would be a better place if we were all a little kinder.)
