“Obligation” by Veena Nankani

A poem about kindness and assertiveness.

If I don’t then I can’t
It doesn’t mean that I don’t want to.

If I could then I would
It that doesn’t mean that I should.

If I can then I will
It that doesn’t mean that I must.

If I do then I choose,
It doesn’t mean that I’m obliged.

If I did then I have
It doesn’t mean I always will.

When I did I put you first
It doesn’t mean that I am bound.

If I don’t or I won’t, it is as valid as when I did
When I did it wasn’t a guarantee that I will do it again.

When I gave it was not out of excess
I gave from my essence.

I could have used it for myself
But you needed it more than me.

Don’t feel entitled
I gave to you joyfully whilst making a sacrifice.

It was all a gift my dear
I am not the gift that keeps on giving.

I must come first in this journey that is my life
You must come first in the journey that is your life.

That was your last
Is there anything else?
Then thank you for visiting
Goodbye.

(No one is obliged to help you. You are not owed anything by anyone. When you are a recipient of kindness – Let your gratitude abound – Because someone made you their temporary priority. But know this, you are no one’s responsibility.)
