“Intention” by Veena Nankani

A poem about the essence of values.

For the sake of your parents.
No.

For the sake of your partner.
No.

For the sake of your children.
No.

For the sake of your comfort.
No.

For the sake of fulfilling expectations.
No.

For the sake of religion.
No.

For the sake of the government.
No.

For the sake of the law.
No.

For the sake of society.
No.

For the sake of duty.
No.

For the sake of money.
No.

For the sake of peace.
No.

For the sake love.
No.

For the sake of your art.
No.

For the sake of fear.
No.

For the sake of pleasing another.
No.

Because it makes you happy.
No.

Because it makes you feel good.
No.

Because it makes you look good.
No.

Because you are desperate?
No.

Because you didn’t have a choice.
Yes – But only if you were a child.

Because it is the right thing to do.
Yes.

Because it is the moral thing to do.
Yes.

Because it is ethical thing to do.
Yes.

Because this is what you choose knowing it’s the best thing for YOUR life.
Yes.

(Intent is as important as the act. Consider the motives of your decision alongside the decision itself.)
