“Leaders” by Veena Nankani

A poem about placing leaders in perspective

If you spend more time in the church than you do with your children
Then your priorities are wrong.

If you treat your priest with more respect than you do your family
Then your priorities are skewed.

If you work all the available hours to move from an apartment to a house
All in the name of giving your family a better life
Whilst simultaneously missing out on their lives
Then your priorities are misplaced.

If you believe your religious leader is anything more than you
Then you have missed the point.

If you believe your religious leader is infallible
Then you have it twisted.

If you believe your religious leader
is the direct representative of God on earth
Then you have a long way to go.

Leaders are not the subject
Neither are they the object.

Leaders point the way
They are not the way.

Every attribute you assign to your leader
Ascribe to your self
You are your primary leader.

(Test what you are told. Question everything. Research your beliefs. Think before you decide. And go at the pace that puts your mental health & YOUR family first. Your leader has a moral obligation and will rightfully put his/her family first)
