TO THE ACTORS
SIDNEY POITIER When I saw your playing a strong, educated, black male lead instead of a servant, you caught my attention immediately. I followed all your films and you became my first crush despite being old enough to be my father. You paved the way for many black actors to be where they are in the film industry today. I thank you. BILL COSBY What you did for the image of black families in media transcended your era which was fraught with multiple obstacles. You addressed the prevalent negative black stereotypes which had been carefully orchestrated by the media to pervade the social consciousness. You used the vessel of humour to bring about a change which was actually quite profound. We do not underestimate the impact of the paradigm shifts you contributed to, and all done through a methodology of peace. I thank you. TO THE SINGERS
LOIS ARMSTRONG From the moment I heard the first words uttered from your lips in song, I was mesmerized. Through you I celebrated individuality and the pursuit of a career in which one is different from the norm. May you rest forever in peace. I thank you. NAT KING COLE, LUTHER VANDROSS & AARON NEVILLE Your voice(s) were and are like silk. You delivered the tender side of black vocal cords and broke out from the loudness of the norm which I also enjoy. From your songs I had down-time mellow music that simply lifted up my atmosphere. When I woke up from two years of sleep and was able to listen to music again by the end of my first year of recovery, your music helped to sooth my soul. Nat and Luther, may you rest forever in peace. I thank you all. THE BEATLES, ABBA & JOHN LENNON It was your lyrics that moved me. You sang about life, not just love songs. Many of your songs touched my heart and are amongst the list of my favourite songs of all time. I thank you. BOB MARLEY You sang the words I often spoke, not in all, but in most of your songs. You addressed the critical issues of inequality, prejudice, emancipation and human rights but with a messages calling for peace. I got lost in your music, your rugged voice comforted me through the many injustices I witnessed; It still does that for me today. Whenever I am low, I have Bob Marley. May you rest forever in peace. I thank you. DIANA ROSS Through your music I celebrated my femininity, through your poise I celebrated dignified womanhood. Whenever I saw you rise, I knew you were paving the way for many more black female artists to be recognized and respected without being caricatures. I thank you. TINA TURNER When I heard and saw you perform I was blown away the the power house that is Tina Turner. I jubilated at your every success. You too paved the way not only for black female singers, but for unconventional, unapologetic, strong female black singers. When I wanted to feel strong I played your music, wore a wig and danced like there was no tomorrow in my bedroom. I thank you. JOE COCKER, MICHAEL BOLTON & QUEEN
Your rugged voices captivated me and made me fall in love with soft rock. You were the ones I listened to when I wanted to hear a powerful male vocal sing about even the most delicate of topics with delicious huskiness. I thank you. MICHAEL JACKSON My love affair of music, dance, performance, uniqueness, ingenuity and a real passion for a craft that radiates from ones essence came when I found you. You broke the mould. Your talent permeated all that you touched. I watched you soar, and I rejoiced with complete excitement and delight. For the lovers of music and performance art everywhere, you are the me the greatest entertainer that has lived thus far. May you rest forever in peace. I thank you. WHITNEY HOUSTON It is right that you are named “The Voice”, because that’s exactly what you were. When I listened to you my heart skipped a beat. It was not just your technique or the mastery of your instrument, it was the laying down and bearing of your soul that made me melt at the sound of your voice. May you rest forever in peace. I thank you. BIGGIE SMALLS, JAY-Z, KANYE WEST, LUDACRIS, EMINEM You are in my opinion the greatest rappers of all time. Your music is what I do not delete when my phone is low on memory. Lyricists, Poets, Artists, Performers, Preachers of the issues of the disadvantaged. You are an outlet for pain for many.
