Because my writing will be visible in the greatest public arena (a.k.a. the internet), I think it expedient to share a little about myself, so those that do not know me can have access to some basic information about me if they seek it.
My nationality is British.
My ethnic heritage is mixed. My mother is Ghanaian and my father is British Indian.
My father is deceased. Thankfully my mother is still alive.
I was born in Kumasi, Ghana, West Africa.
I immigrated to the U.K. at the age of six with my mother and siblings to join my father.
I have four brothers, one of whom is adopted. My adopted brother is ethnically fully Ghanaian.
Between the age of nine and eleven I took a vow of silence because I was depressed. I announced to my family that I will speak again when I have understood reality. At eleven I announced the end of my depression because I had found a peace and joy within, which has since remained unquenchable.
I am privileged to have three best friends, the first of which has always been my self, secondly my best friend since childhood Katie, and lastly my best friend since my teenage years Doris, who happens to be my cousin.
I am currently in a relationship with a wonderful man who has been a pillar of support through an exceptionally difficult year. I am truly grateful for his kindness. I have overcome verbal, emotional, physical, domestic, financial and sexual abuse. I am committed to raising awareness and providing support to end all forms of bullying, abuse and oppression. I am an advocate of non-violence.
I have been married once. We divorced after a very brief period. I was incredibly ill whilst I was married. Unfortunately he didn’t see my recovery. I am grateful for all the lessons learned and wish him nothing but happiness.
I have no biological children. I have informally fostered many children and I have informally adopted four people. Sadly one of my children died in 2012 when she lost her battle with cancer. I have recovered from grieving. One of my kids is gay. With the exception of one child, all of my children call me Veena – I love few things more than hearing the sound of their voices. I get mum and mummy on mother’s day, my birthdays, their birthdays, when they want something, or when they are feeling emotional. One of my kids is older than me – adults need a mummy too – I am her legal guardian. Ironically she is the only one that calls me mum all the time. All of my adopted kids are over the age of eighteen now. I am currently thirty five years old at the time of writing this statement in June 2014. With the exception of one of my adopted kids, all my adopted kids have mental special needs.
I love children, I love adults, I love women, I love men, I love those who are straight, I love those who are gay and all those in-between. I care about all people and I love all humanity. I believe everyone should be treated with dignity, respect and all their human rights. I believe people should be judged by the contents of their character, not their gender or sexuality. There are some that say that no one should be judged at all. To me, this is an ill advised extreme. Judgements are necessary to determine who you want in your life and to what extent. This type of judgement is one of compatibility, not one of value. For me peace, happiness and joy are not emotions, and gratitude, compassion, and kindness are not character attributes, they are my state of being.
I have Lupus, Rheumatoid arthritis and Fibromyalgia. One of the things that has helped me cope with the challenges of my health is my sense of humour. I simply love to laugh. I will laugh at anything funny, including laughing at myself. I only wear a brazier on special occasions. I carry my handbag on a trolley. I only wear clothes if I’m expecting company or I have to go outside. It may surprise you after my previous statements above that I really love fashion. From 2014 onwards I’m going to attempt to wear more clothes.
I had a medical crisis just before my mid-twenties which left me in and out of consciousness for the better part of two years. The first two years after I woke and remained awake continuously were spent intensively on rehabilitation in everyday activities such as eating, walking, talking, reading and writing. I began writing books meant for publication in my early twenties, before my medical crisis. From February 2002 until the last week in March 2014 I did not write a single creative thing, nor did I add any words to the books I had previously started. When I recovered from my medical crisis and resumed my life, my focus was my financial survival and the mental and physical health of the children that came my way. It is now June 2014, it has been twelve years since I stopped writing. I am now in month three of my writing career in which I have written and published “Mum Knows Best” and a series of short poems online. MY PASSIONS

I have chosen to share some matters here about myself which are quite private and of which I have rarely spoken of to anyone outside of my inner circle. As I re-enter my “public life” (by publishing my work) after a long hiatus, I believe the sharing of my back-story will encourage some delicate flowers to move forward and blossom. KNOWING intellectually that “public” figures and successful people are not immune to unfortunate extraordinary challenges in life is very different from HEARING examples of this from the horse’s own mouth. This alone can stimulate hope and the overcoming process in others.
The personal information I have placed on my website and on my social media is the maximum I am comfortable sharing about my self, my current relationship, my ex-husband, my children, my family or my friends. I rarely state the full names of people in my private life out of respect for their right to privacy.
