“Aren’t you glad” by Veena Nankani

A poem about the beautiful phenomenon known as life.

Aren’t you glad you were loved?
Aren’t you glad you were raised well?
Aren’t you glad that you’ve found love?
Aren’t you glad that you are happy?

Aren’t you glad that you waited?
Aren’t you glad that you are ready?
Aren’t you glad that you conceived?
Aren’t you glad you have delivered?
Aren’t you glad your child is healthy?
Aren’t you glad that you are happy?

Aren’t you glad your child is growing?
Aren’t you glad your child is learning?
Aren’t you glad your child is schooled?
Aren’t you glad your child is good?
Aren’t you glad your child is happy?
Aren’t you glad that you are happy?

Aren’t you glad your child is safe?
Aren’t you glad your child trusts you?
Aren’t you glad your child is expressing their deepest thoughts and fears with you?
Aren’t you glad with your experience, you are wise and know what to say?
Aren’t you glad your child is happy?
Aren’t you glad that you are happy?

Aren’t you glad your child is hormonal?
Aren’t you glad the hormones are working?
Aren’t you glad your child is rebelling?
Aren’t you glad the rebellion is over?
Aren’t you glad your child is starting to see you
as a person separate from themselves for the first time?
Aren’t you glad your child is happy?
Aren’t you glad that you are happy?

Aren’t you glad your child is trained?
Aren’t you glad your child is learned?
Aren’t you glad your child is working?
Aren’t you glad your child is stable?
Aren’t you glad your child is in healthy relationship and has found love?
Aren’t you glad you’re child is settled?
Aren’t you glad your child is happy?
Aren’t you glad that you are happy?

Aren’t you glad your child is expecting?
Aren’t you glad to see little fingers and little toes again?
Aren’t you glad to look after your grandchild?
Aren’t you glad you have a grandchild?
Aren’t you glad your child now looks at you with a new appreciation?
Aren’t you glad your child said thank you and fully understood why?
Aren’t you glad your child is happy?
Aren’t you glad that you are happy?

Aren’t you glad that you have come through the grief of losing your partner?
Aren’t you glad that you had a life-partner and that you were loved?
Aren’t you glad you have re-found your joy and the grieving is now over?
Aren’t you glad your child is happy knowing that you are happy again?
Aren’t you glad your child is happy?
Aren’t you glad that you are happy?

Aren’t you glad you have retired?
Aren’t you glad you are savouring every moment?
Aren’t you glad you learnt to forgive?
Aren’t you glad you’ve healed from the pain?
Aren’t you glad you are fully confident in being all of you?
Aren’t you glad for all the memories?
Aren’t you glad you have your memory?

Aren’t you glad that you have lived?
Aren’t you glad that you were loved?
Aren’t you glad that you gave love?
Aren’t you glad for all the lessons?
Aren’t you glad you are no longer afraid of the coming end?
Aren’t you glad that you were here?
Aren’t you glad that you are leaving?
Aren’t you glad that you are glad?

Take a bow.
Smile.
Fade.
Breathe your last.
Be glad.
Peace. Peace. Eternal peace.

(You are truly blessed if you have had the privilege of an ordinary life.)
